§ 21. Come, Gospel

Pope Golroana remained on his knees as he spoke. “You and I both are candidates in the Selection Trial. If it is a holy battle you wish for, then I am ready to face you. However, I will not be cajoled. No matter how much you beat this body, the faith in this heart will not waver.” His unwavering will could be felt from his honest expression. “You will never recover the scriptures and find your way to Revalschned.”

“Sorry, but you saying that only makes me want to disprove you even more,” I replied, looking down at him from above. “How long are you going to pray? You can’t fight me while sitting.”

Without breaking his pose, Golroana spoke in a songlike voice. “Would that be a problem for you?”

“Oh?”

“I am Golroana Delo Jiordal, pope of Jiordal and the one bestowed with the title of Savior. I must continue praying until the day of salvation arrives in the underground world.” He glared up at me. “Please, come at me without reservation. My body is protected by the miracle of Equis, which eliminates all that might cause me distress.”

“Interesting. Then I shall do just that. Zola e Dypt.”

A huge magic circle appeared on the floor as he spoke. Jet-black flames emerged from within, forming chains that wrapped around Golroana’s kneeling body. The hellfire chains burned intensely, morphing into a magic circle used for greater magic.

“Thou shalt learn fear. No one may restrict our god.”

Divine light gathered around Golroana’s pledge ring. A flame lit up inside the jewel, and a three-dimensional magic circle appeared. The layers piled on top of each other, and his magic reached a godly level in no time at all.

A strange sound echoed through the air as the tuning fork pillars reverberated. The sound grew louder and louder, ringing out at irregular intervals like an unfamiliar melody. A god began to manifest behind the pope.

“Come, Gospel. Guala Nateh Forteos.”

With another series of loud tones, a long-haired god in blue robes appeared.

“Azept Doldread.”

The god that had descended was absorbed into Golroana’s body. The pope’s magic swelled, and Zola e Dypt’s chains swayed like a mirage and then vanished. Another tone later, Golroana’s body teleported ten meters behind me.

“Doldread, the God of Gospel, is Pope Golroana’s Selection God,” Arcana said, standing beside me. “As the god that governs sound, Doldread can take the form of sound itself.”

“Hmm. So they can’t be restrained by fire or chains. That aside”—I looked over at Arcana—“how’s the wound you received from Diedrich?”

“Healed.”

“Then let’s deal with this swiftly.”

I drew a magic circle and cast Badorom. The room turned into a vacuum, and silence enveloped the area. However, the gospel broke that silence, resounding despite the vacuum. Its melody bounced between the tuning fork pillars, filling the room with magic. Doldread, the God of Gospel, was the god of sound—which was why their magic grew each time the melody hummed from the pillars.

“On the day of resurrection, the gospel will bring temporary life to fallen followers,” Golroana said in a songlike prayer.
